my vet

Question:

Unfortunatly a lot of vet bashing is done here.  Just like all professions there are good and bad.  I never had a bad experience with any vet I’ve dealt with.  One time when I was unhappy with the services my vet provided I brought it to his attention and he immediatly took care of the problem.   I think those who gripe about vets could probably handle the problem with a bit of communication (solves most all problems) instead of complaining on the newsgroups. Its certainly more pleasant reading  about the good things instead of whinning about the bad. Janice

here here!! I agree that it is great to hear about good experiences!  I have never had a problem with a vet, and I always try to get recommendations from other pet owners before choosing a vet…I will say this…I really enjoy when a vet explains everything they are doing and everything I might run into dealing with a certain breed…I went to one vet and got very good care for my Pomeranian, who was later killed…after getting a new Pom, I went to a different vet, because we had moved…this vet told me everything to watch out dealing with this small breed, and also what problem areas she was checking…when she told me the pup’s kneecaps (for lack of the medical term :-) )might be a problem because they seemed loose, she took the time to go to another room, get a model and explain in great detail what the problem might be…she then told me not to worry, as the pup was too young to say for sure, but she would keep a look out for it…she also told me that it might require surgery to fix….she did this not to scare me, but to prepare me in the future…she told me it probably wouldn’t be necessary, but be aware that the possibility was there….I really appreciated this…the point is-the 1st vet obviously knew what they were doing, but didn’t take the time to explain it..this one did, and it made me feel that me and the pup mattered!

with all of this debate about vets, I thought I’d add my own experiences. Perhaps I have been lucky. Having lived outside a major city and in a more remote area over the last decade I have done business with two different vet practices. My experiences with both were exemplary. When i lived near the city I used a busy vet practice/hospital. The doctor there went out of her way on a number of occassions while my kitten was suffering from "fevers of unknown origin" and even went to the point of clearing her roster of patients on a busy Saturday morning to administer IV fluids to my cat, watch his progress and consult with colleagues about what the problem might have been. This is the same vet who called on Xmas eve to check the cats condition, and always informed me up front of the cost of tests and procedures. This veterinary practice also did spays and neutering for dogs and cats on a sliding fee scale based on family income. My cat is healthy and happy, some seven years later. My present veterinarian treats my 4 dogs, as well as my cats. He has gone to great lengths to succsessully treat my Boston Terrier’s epilepsy, provides discounts to owners of multiple pets, never demands money up front and has often over the years met me at his office during off hours to treat an emergency, again, with no request for money up front. His practice also performed surgery on my Boston’s luxating patellas at less than 50% of the estimate provided to me from a competing practice. That was four years ago and my poor dog could barely walk without her little knees popping out of joint. Today she runs and plays effortlessly. Like I said, just wanted to add my own experiences (
