Anvil and WNV
Question:
I was sitting around mourning the disappearance of the birds in Evanston, IL, when I decided to look up the pesticide that they have been spraying around here. It’s called Anvil and it contains a synthetic chemical called sumithrin. The web site for the North Shore Mosquito Abatement District claims "there is no evidence that it is harmful to humans and animals". Sumithrin belongs to a class of pesticides called pyrethroids and, according to the various studies referred to in a Google search, are *toxic* to the Thyroid and the immune system in general. It boils down to there is "no evidence" because long term studies and detailed studies have not been conducted. There is some short-term evidence that sumithrin is toxic to the kidneys and liver. This stuff has been sprayed over our lawns over the course of the summer. without our knowledge; at least without a post card from the city telling us it was being done, which is what they used to do. We are all struggling to maintain the health and wellness of our pets ( to say nothing of ourselves), and we weren’t given the opportunity to close our windows? When I read all the posts about compromised immune systems and CRF I can’t help but wonder if, in fact, we are being poisoned. If they don’t spray, will my nice 80 year old neighbor die of WNV? Please does anyone have any input on this scary situation?

Well, they used Anvil in NYC (after first using malathion, which is supposedly even worse) and I don’t recall hearing reports of toxicity to cats and dogs, although some people did apparently get sick from some heavy doses. You’re right–your city should have told you ahead of time. Here in Chicago, as I mentioned on the other ng, at least they have been announcing when they were going to spray and telling people to go indoors, take your cats and dogs with you, and close all the windows for at least 30 minutes after the truck has gone by. We have been shutting up the house at dusk and not going out until the next morning. Whether the Anvil has actually dissipated by then, I don’t know–but on the other hand, I’ve never actually seen or heard a spray truck come by either. I have been bitten by a few mosquitoes though, and yes, I think you are right to be worried about your 80 year old neighbor. Whether spraying really does more good than harm, I don’t know. Hopefully we’ll get cold weather soon and that will end the WNV threat for this season.

That doesn’t seem right that they didn’t give you notice; they’ve sprayed in my area (but not my neighborhood) and told people when it would be done and also said that even though it would not harm humans or wildlife, to stay indoors with your pets for a half hour after spraying was finished… hmm..
