Recommended cat health books?
Question:
Can anyone recommend a good book on cat health? While my kitty’s healthy and I hope he always stays thay way, I know there’s a chance that he’ll come down with something. Ideally I’d like to know what symptoms to watch for, which ones to call the vet about immediately, and which ones can wait until the vet’s office opens in the morning.

I use "The Well Cat Book" by Terri McGinnis D.V.M (Random House). Good general and practical first aid. It was first published in 1976 so I’m not sure if it’s still in print. Good luck. — Balano

There’s a brand new one that I think is excellent. It’s called _Your Aging Cat_, by Kim Campbell Thornton and John Hamil. Though it’s aimed at people with older cats, it’s full of good general information and resources. Wish I’d had it years ago (of course, it didn’t come out until 1996). jo — Jo Miller http://www.geocities.com/Athens/5756/

A revised edition of the above was being sold last year. It’s a good choice. My own personal favorite is "The Cat Owner’s Home Veterinary Handbook," by Carlson and Giffen, which was also re- cently revised. For emergency treatment, my favorite — which may be out of print, but I’m not sure — is "Cat First Aid" by George E. Boyle and Charles L. Blood, published by Storey Com- munications Inc in 1990. "Out of Harm’s Way" by Terri Crisp, also recent, includes appendices giving advice on disaster preparedness. And when it comes to emergency care for small wildlings, the best I’ve found is "Care of the Wild Feathered and Furred," by Mae Hickman and Maxine Guy. There is usually an edi- tion of this — it’s a long-time standard — available somewhere. Stacy Scott

It’s still in print, I just got a copy for myself recently. If you don’t see it in your bookstore, ask for it. They can order a copy for you. Great reference book!! Tag
