HELP! Nervous system disorder in my friend's cat? ^. .^

Question:

Does anyone know what this is…? My friend’s cat has displayed some unusual behaviour a couple of times this past month. She will get up and start walking, but slightly loses her balance and stumbles a bit (not falling down), with a bit of twitching in the legs. It appears to be some sort of nervous system disorder. It lasts about 10-15 seconds and then she’s fine. She is about 10 years old. Since it happens so rarely, would a vet be able to check anything? ^..^ * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

It certainly seems like some sort of debility or disorder in the nervous system. This kind of behaviour (as described above) is not normal, and in addition she is an elderly (or could at least be classified as "middle-aged"  :)) lady, which makes it even more likely there is a serious problem. The cat might need medication to stop or slow down the progression of whatever’s wrong with her, and it’s utterly important that she’s diagnosed and receives proper medical care ASAP. Please ask your friend to take her to the vet now, and let us know what happens, OK? Good luck. I’m hoping for the best. If the twitching is in the rear legs, it could be the symptoms of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy or Congestive Heart Failure, or a number of other possibilities.  Does she display any signs of labored and noisy breathing?  I would get her to a vet as soon as possible.  If you would like more information on HCM, please visit my site: http://maxshouse.com , I have a section on heart disorders complete with illustrations and symptoms. it could also be a siezure. It sounds like a job for a vet, and it is epilepsy there are lots of good meds these days. Let us know how it goes!!! Good luck!

Response:

The vet said yesterday that her bloodwork was good, so she doesn’t have Leukemia, or kitty AIDS, and that he wants to check her again in a month.  He said it’s most likely petit mal epilepsy. We’ll watch her closely from here on out.
