>I wouldn’t be surprised, it is after all basically a flavored petroleum >jelly being used as a laxative.  So long as you are talking about using it >as directed two to (max) three times weekly there should be no problem. >Just never use it daily on an extended basis.

With our HCM cat CJ, we had to give petromalt for an extended time because the stress of a hairball could kill her. Our vet (not that vets are always right) said that the worst it could do was give her a soft stool. Julie Carter — ICQ 1265510

It’s the petroleum which interferes with absorption.  Overuse of any petroleum based product (Laxatone, Vaseline, Petramalt) can cause problems. That is why the label says use daily until symptoms disappear, and if they don’t see your veterinarian.  In other words, don’t feed a petroleum based product indefinitely. I’ve never heard of the product you mentioned.  We use Petromalt when the cats have hairballs and have never had a problem.  However I don’t give it more than 3 days at a time.  Any medication or supplement taken in excess can cause problems. — Tally’s Page Cat Health & Behavior Links, Special Remembrances, Animal Issues & Photos! http://www.tallyville.com

I recently read an article written by a vet, who stated that Petromalt (that hairball stuff) can interfere with a cat’s normal absorption of nutrients from their food, because Petromalt coats the stomach lining. Anyone else aware of this?  He also recommended a product called the "Missink Link" as a natural remedy for hairballs as well a dietary supp. Rick …

I don’t use petromalt on my guys, not only for that reason.  But it doesn’t work for my guy who has hairbals REAL bad.  It’s okay for the cats that only get them once in a while, but for a cat that gets them more than once a day, it’s useless.  I use vitalax in combination with Jamieson PetCare Furball Buster.
