Decrease in Appetite
Question:
Thanks Phil (and others) She is a year and half. The weather here (UK) is humid and constantly changing from hot to cold at the moment. She drank a lot on Sunday but seems to have stopped drinking so much now. She is eating about 100g throughout the day (she is not a big cat). She has not manifestly lost weight yet. She is not totally lethargic, she is still responding to stimuli and popping outside to chase flies etc. The last time she threw up was a little bit on Friday. She is locked in all night so I would know if she had diarhorrea or was weeing a lot or vomiting then. I read your other post about your cats’ changes which was interesting. I really don’t want to take her to the vets if it is not necessary because she finds it traumatic and if she is already unhappy about something I feel it might make her feel even worse and more insecure. There is a black cat from next door who comes in quite a lot during the day and eats her food sometimes. Would this annoy her enough to make her cut down on eating? It has been going on for sometime but I don’t like to chase the cat away as it looks so scrawny and I have enough food for two. Well thanks for everyone’s input. It’s great to know so many people care. Before you buy.

I was thinking the same thing … when it gets really hot and humid "the guys" seem the same as the people … they slow down, drink more, eat less. jma

Who’s more paranoid about cats than me? (I’d say its a tie) I guess the main reason for suggesting waiting another day or two is that I was running my cats to the vet more frequently around the time of season changes because I noticed slight pecularities – didn’t put it together until my vet hammered it into my head about 10 times. I was stressing them out for nothing. Mermaid didn’t mention diarrhea or vomitting or any other symptoms only "a little more lethargic than normal but only a bit", and reduced eating during humid climate. That describes my Ladies to a Tee when weather changes – even before a storm. Of course, if it persists for more than another day or 2, I would say take her to the vet without any further delay. You know what’s said about paranoia: You only have to be right once to make it all worthwhile! Phil. "Cat people are different, to the extent that they generally are not conformists. Your cats don’t change up with sudden changes in climate? Mine do. Eat less, lay around more for a few days until they get used to the change. Hey, I’m the first one to yell "to the vet" for anything – She’s eating, and drinking and no other symptoms – I’d give it another day or two. Well, being that I’m allergic to just about everything on the planet, my guys don’t really experience any major weather changes. It’s either the heat or the AC on here. I was a bit alarmed that she said the cat is eating only about 1/3 of her normal amount. With my guys, that would be next to nothing. Call me paranoid……<G>

The increased drinking, along w/ the slight lethargy & some loss of appetite, all combined, signal a needed vet appt. It’s true that when it’s *very* hot & humid, I’ve noticed that my cats don’t eat as much, and are more lethargic. But when you add in the increased thirst, it signifies a potential medical problem that needs attention. Good luck. Cathy — "Decades gliding by like Indians, time is cheap." Paul Simon ("Ren
