Helen-         The Boss of My Heart and I were talking about Waffles, and she asked me what Waffles was like. She asked me to ask you for one or two Waffles stories, so that she- and others here who don’t know you- would know where to send healing thoughts.         I imagine you’re sitting by the phone worry about her, but perhaps you (or Nathan) could find a moment to tell us what you love best about her.         She’s in our hearts and thoughts. Paul, both you and the Boss of Your Heart are showing much kindness, which is greatly appreciated. This is to you and to everyone else who has been sending messages of support both in email and on the NGs *THANK YOU* *THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART* Many of my cat stories which feature Waffles can be read at http://www.sniksnak.com/helen-s.html Also, when a friend from the States came to visit, she put the story of her stay (as written by her cats…) on her webpage. This can be found at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Meadows/1240/wendling.html Below I’ve copied an extract of a message I recently sent to a friend of mine. It explains pretty much how I feel about my Waffly Cat. ~~~~~ …I love that little cat so much. I will never forget how she stayed by my side when I was bedridden with pain from migraines – she didn’t give up on me – how can I give up on her? I can’t and I won’t. It’s such a risk allowing them to have outside access. Waffles is part feral and she loves to be out hunting in the warm weather. She has a good life as a cat, doing cat things, chasing mice, voles, shrews. She purrs with pleasure as she brings me her latest "gift" and drops it at my feet:-) She has a look of feline joy on her face as she climbs the willows on the banks of the stream, whiskers out sniffing the air, eyes wide and alert. If she’s in the garden and I go outside, she runs to me and jumps up to give me a headbutt greeting, purring all the while. She often sits on the stump of the apple tree looking out over the fields, watching the world go by, and hoping to spot a mouse I think:-) It’s a favourite scracth post of hers too. She always comes in of an evening and spends the evening curled up alongside, or on, her "hoomins" – purring quietly. When I go to bed, she’ll jump up on the duvet – plonk herself down on top of me, stick her head up under my chin and *purr* loudly. At the same time, she’ll have a paw either side of my neck, and she milk treads my hair for ages – it’s like having it backcombed:-) If she’s not with me, she’ll curl up with Nathan, in her role of "guardian of the night", keeping bad dreams at bay. Many’s the morning Vernon and I have woken up each with a cat sat on the duvet on top of us, staring down at us. I think they are doing their cat hypnotism bit, "You *will* wake up. You *will* feed us now…" (smile) Waffles is a clever cat – she taught herself to pull open drawers. I’ll never forget the day she managed to pull open the bedroom drawer – the one that contains Vernon’s clean underwear… She proudly picked up and marched off with a pair of Vernon’s clean underpants in her jaws:-) During the day she loves to be out hunting. I keep her in during bad weather and boy does she let us all know her thoughts on that. Have you heard a cat swear and cuss? Waffles can swear and cuss for the UK if she’s not allowed "inna Owt" when she wants to be:-) I’m sure it’s because she’s part feral, her mother being a pet cat on a farm but her father being a very feral tabby tom that visited the farm. If her injuries are such that she can’t go out anymore, I think her spirit will break. Bones are easier to heal than the spirit. When Vernon, Nathan and I had three weeks away in Austria a few summers ago, a neightbour who is as cat friendly as I am came to check on Waffles and Francis every day – she fed them, checked water bowls, changed litter trays etc., and generally spent time with them – not letting them out, but making sure they were fine in our absence. I would do the same for her as and when she and her husband went away somewhere. On our return my neighbour told me how Waffles was going stir crazy being inside so long. Indeed she had – Waffles was wide-eyed and howling at the doors and windows. Lord, I want Waffles to recover, but I don’t want her spirit crushed. (Smile) I’ve just remembered about my then neighbour’s cat. She had a ginger tom (neutered), called Thomas. He was a pale orange tabby and very friendly. He and Waffles were best friends:-) If he saw Waffles sitting in the window of my house, he would wander over and sit below the window meowing for her to go out. Waffles would then run to the door and when I let her out – the two of them would go off and play in the garden together. It was so sweet. I fondly referred to Thomas as "Sir Thomas Gingivitis", Waffles’s feline knight in shining armour. The two them would chase each other around the garden, pouncing at each other from out of the flower borders. They’d end up exhausted and lie flat out on the lawn together:-) One of these days I’ll write a sort of feline fairy tale with "Princess Wafflet, holder of the sacred chalice of Bast" and "Sir Thomas Gingivitis" as the main characters:-) ~~~~~ *hugs* to all who have been sending messages of support for Waffles. Many, many thanks, helen s Love us, love ower hoomin…

Just returned from visiting Waffles. Took in a blouse of mine that I wore yesterday. Both Vernon and Nathan rubbed their hands on it. It has been put in Waffles’s cage – she is lying with her head on it. Hopefully, the scents of her family will be helping her to stay calm and rest. Also took in two cans of her favourtie "treat" foods to see if this will tempt her appetite so she eats more and builds her strength. Going in to see her she was still extremely woozy from the effects of the anesthetic used to be able to x-ray her. But, as soon as she heard my voice, followed by Vernon and Nathan’s voices, her tail twitched – it was her greeting twitch! Looked at the x-rays. Her pelvis is broken in four places – it is completey detached from the spinal column at both sides so it is completely unstable. It needs pinning. Her right leg is snapped in two in the femur and there are various bone fragments there. The plan is, if all goes well, to pin the bones and have an external fixator. She also has broken ribs and a fractured skull. These seem to be the minor injuries compared to the pelvic and leg fractures. The right eye will be removed. Tomorrow we’ll be visiting Waffles again. Please continue to pray for her and send healing thoughts and for her vets, so they can do what is necesssary on Monday, with all going smoothly. Many, many thanks, helen s Love us, love ower hoomin…

Helen-         The Boss of My Heart and I were talking about Waffles, and she asked me what Waffles was like.

Many, many thanks, helen s Love us, love ower hoomin…

that sounds bad. but not unfixable. if her pelvis isn’t fragmented she has a lot more chance of survival. and she sounds as though she’s determined not to give up, which is half the battle.when an animal decides to die there’s not much you can do for them, but waffles seems pretty convinced that she’ll live so you have a chance. still – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Just returned from visiting Waffles. > Took in a blouse of mine that I wore yesterday. Helen, From your last update, sounds like the medical team has a specific plan on how to tackle things on Monday,  that’s a good sign!   Keep the faith……  and when Waffles comes-to after the Sorry if I seem over optimistic, but after loosing my Misha, something good has to happen for someone! (right now I almost wish I could remove my remaining cats eyes……. hubby forgot to buy more crunchies last night, and even though they have had their canned food before bed last night …. they keep walking up beside me looking at the empty bowl and giving me dirty looks!) Take care of yourself and your family…. when Waffles comes home, she’ll need lots of TLC Darlene
