Time out! I don’t know about chicken meal and lamb meal, but I know for sure that fish meal is either made from waste from a filleting/processing operation, or from whole fish. That’s not exactly my definition of human-grade food. Also, what about the poultry fat? That’s the stuff I throw away when I skin the chicken when I get it home from the grocery. <snippage>
Response:
I’ve always wondered why a poultry company would take chicken it could sell into the human food market at a high price and sell it to a petfood manufacturer at a lower price. The economics never made sense to me, but then, I was not an economics major. Can you find out who manufacturers their fish meal? You seem to have good contacts with FRR.
Response:
The poultry fat in this cat food is human grade, even though it’s not something most of us choose to eat. Rather, it is of a quality deemed acceptable for human consumption as opposed to that which is unacceptable for human consumption. The latter goes into feed products, among them pet foods, an area far less stringently regulated than human foods. The poultry fat referred to in this company’s ingredient panel is a human grade fat source because it contains no Ethoxyquin (among other things) which is deemed unfit for human consumption in concentrations in excess of, I believe, 5 parts per million as per the FDA. Everything Flint River uses is human grade food (same with Innova and a few others.) According to their printed materials, all products are human grade as opposed to pet grade, and there is no use of by-products in any of it. With regard to chicken meal and other meals, the say the following: Our chicken is not from rendering plants where by-products are rendered at high temperature. There are no bones, by-products or indigestible parts in our chicken meal. It is strictly human quality chicken flesh with some edible skin. The same as you would cook for your family." With regard to "meal" form, it refers to a process in which the water is removed for ease of handling and reduced shipping costs. Regarding fish meal which you mentioned, the company maintains that all of their foods are human grade and that meal form is a process performed on (in their case, at least) human grade foods, which would include the fish. If you would like, I can check with the company for more information. Ari loves it too. When I first got it, I put a dish of FRR alongside a dish off Nutro. I didn’t really expect Ari to demonstrate a strong preference. He jsut doesn’t get real enthused about anything. But he didn’t touch the Nutro at all until there was absoltuely no FRR left. And we used the dry water as a treat. He loves that, too. — Power concedes nothing without a demand. Frederick Douglass

I called Flint River Ranch on Friday and found out about their half price promotional offer which was mentioned here on cat and dog foods, which lasts through the end of October. That makes the 9 pound cat and kitten food $10 including shipping. 10 pounds of puppy & adult dog food is $about $7, Senior food for overweight/inactive dogs is 10 pounds for $7 and Lamb, Millet & Rice food for dogs with sensitivities to wheat and chicken is $7.00. For the last three, add $3.50 for shipping as all orders under $10 are charged a flat fee to ship. Probably makes more sense to order two types and skip the shipping fee. If you aren’t satisfied, you can get your money back within 30 days of ordering. You can get more info on the products and the trial offer by dropping me a quick note. That said, it’s important to mention right here that I’ve decided to make the Gracie’s Safe Harbor site a distributor since I’ve found this to be an excellent product made from human-grade food, and both Gracie and Honey really love it. (I mix it with their other food and they keep picking it out and eating it first.) I also think this would be a good way to cover the expenses that come with the website (server, domain, etc.) especially as I’m adding something new to the website as well. In addition to the content on abuse, neglect, locating state and local shelters & and rescues, and veterinary and legal resources, I’m adding free webpages for shelters and rescues which need them (I’ll set the pages up and update them – they don’t need to know HTML, etc.) This way they can establish an online presence and increase visibility for themselves and the dogs and cats in their care. The www.GraciesSafeHarbor.com domain should be working early next week, so the page urls will be really simple. If you know of a shelter or rescue that needs a page and/or one with a simple url, please let me know and I’d be happy to help. — Stop animal abuse. Start here.
