Boy kitten vs. girl kitten – Help!

Question:

Sounds, pretty usual to me too!  Good advice about getting him neutered, you’ll see a big change and speaking of change put some pennies and nickels in a jar and shake it when ever he jumps up at your food and he will learn quick enough.  The squirt gun didn’t work on our two because they loved it.  Good luck. — Very Truly Yawn, MBankaT — – — – — .

Hi All~ I haven’t been to the boards for about a year but since I got a new little addition a few weeks ago I felt the need to return to ask for some advice. Here’s the situation.  I have an 8 week old kitty (found abandoned, bottle fed him, etc) and he’s quite active.  I have 3 other cats all female – 2 are 4 years old and one is 1 year old.  They finally all get along (I know I’m pretty lucky with that)!  This male kitten however, is so much more different than the girl cats were when they were kittens.  Can others relate to that?  This male kitten acts like he’s king of the world at 8 weeks!  He is like a scavenger trying to eat table food….he climbs up me like a crazed thing trying to get to whatever I may be eating on the couch or at the table.  And he is much more vocal and whiny than the others ever were.  Is this normal boy cat behavior? He’s also much more active and viscious in his playing and is scratching the heck out of us!  We clip the nails often but WOW! I will have difficulty finding this spot on the boards again. Response:

His behavior doesn’t sound unusual to me for a male cat. It would probably help if you have him neutered.  Male cats often settle down a bit after that.  Also, growing older helps. It seems like he’s doing things many kittens get into.  Being more whiny than the others is probably just his individual personality as well as being more active (at that age than the other cats were). It’s the climbing on the table for food and the biting and scratching behaviors that are what to be concerned about. There are many techniques, and everyone has his favorite.  They include growling like a cat when it misbehaves, hissing like a cat, spraying him with water from a spray bottle, etc.  I’m sure other posters can tell us what worked for them. The point here is that you have to show the cat that *you* are the dominant cat, not him. Bill
