He does not do this often but has before. He is going on nine in January 2000. I just hate it when he does this. I think I do not want him anymore but realize that I made a life commitment when I Took this little kitten in 8+ years ago. Besides, with his attitude no one else would keep him and would probably have him put to sleep. I have been told by friends that they would just euthanize a cat like that. Was I wrong to keep him all these years and love him unconditionally? I feel so guilt for wondering but I can’t understand why he does that. I have been nothing but nice. Not abusive and very very loving. He is my little baby. Always will be even though he weighs in now at 28-32 pounds. I have had my suspicion he is part Bobcat for various reasons, size being one(not weight but size) he is huge and a Maine Coon has nothing on this guy. Could it be the wild part of him that causes his reactions. It is like he is not there but in another world when he attacks. what you did is actually quite a setup for exactly the result you got, unfortunately. he was excited, stimulated, and anxious by the sight of this other cat and SUDDENLY, OUT OF NOWHERE, BAM!! You picked him up at exactly the wrong time. Unfortunately he simply responded just like any animal on alert and ready to defend its territory. That isn’t "an attitude", that is *human error*, regardless of what your friends say. Does your vet say your cat is at a healthy weight for it’s size? Having these types of incidents can set up a pattern where the cat associates you with a threat and is more likely to bite. You may want to pick up a good book on cat behavior which covers this situation, and desensitization and retraining techniques that you can use to keep this from happening again. Hi, If this behaviour is not a once off incident, have you considered taking him to a pet behaviourist for some type of analysis? Here are some articles about aggressive cats: http://www.vetinfo.com/cataggres.html http://www.petshealth.com/library/aggrescats.html Territorial dynamics between housemates are a delicate balance. Relationships between cats that used to coexist can become upset by redirected aggression. This can happen, for example, if one of them sees something outside but then takes it out on the closest target (frequently an ‘innocent bystander’). At the very least you should keep one of them in a closed room when you are not home. Tempers should subside if they are not repeatedly inflamed but it may take time. If separation is not enough, then we really need to consider setting up a consult. This can become a complicated problem that requires intervention. Heidi, I had a cat who did such things on occasion. I never figured out why. I loved him anyway and just ignored the "friends" who thought euthanasia was the answer. I just learned to approach him carefully. It sounded as though the bite might be infected. You probably know how serious cat bites can be. You might need to see a doctor. Don’t wait if there is *any* problem. The infection can spread very fast. I was almost hospitalized within eight hours of a cat bite on my finger (not my cat) once–swelling and a red streak up the arm…. Be very attentive to your injury. Good luck. What happened with your cat is called redirected aggression. Here is a definition: <This type of aggression is directed toward another animal (cat or otherwise) who did not initially provoke the behavior. For example, a household cat sitting in the window may see an outdoor cat walk across the front yard. Because she cannot attack the outdoor cat, she may instead turn and attack the other family cat who is sitting next to her in the window. Redirected aggression can be either offensive or defensive in nature> If your cat is upset by seeing another cat, never attempt to touch him or pick him up.There is no reason for you to give him up or euthanize him,as redirected aggression is a common reaction when a cat sees another cat intrude into its territory. The best thing you can do is make an effort to keep cats away from the window and his line of vision. You should also go to the doctor NOW,as it sounds like you need to get medication for your wound, which is becoming infected. I have to agree wth other posters that it sounds like misdirected aggression. I had a cat who bit me very hard (drawing blood badly) twice in her life. Both times it was because I had made a mistake in timing in terms of getting near her when she was very upset at another cat. Otherwise, she was a sweet lapcat, that I had the pleasure of knowing for many years. Please take the advice others here suggested, and I’m betting you’ll be able to have a long, loving relationship with your cat. Just needed to vent and hopefully someone will have some insight into what is going on in that fuzzy kitty brain. what you did is actually quite a setup for exactly the result you got, unfortunately. he was excited, stimulated, and anxious by the sight of this other cat and SUDDENLY, OUT OF NOWHERE, BAM!! I believe these books both covered this issue: Is Your Cat Crazy? (Wright) Psycho Kitty (Johnson) Eileen – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> Ok so only one of my cats bit me. I don’t think there is anything wrong with your cat. You are making a mistake when you go to touch your cat when he is agitated. If you can’t keep the strays out of sight you might need to restrict your cat from the window. please read this article by Kathleen Engel of the Nebraska Humane Society, which explains this type of behaviour http://www.discoveromaha.com/living/pets/engel-behavior_felineaggress… l Some further reading about cat behaviour is probably a good idea, as someone else suggested. — Le >’o'< lewe at homemail dot com >’o'< |Ok so only one of my cats bit me. Best of luck. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > Ok so only one of my cats bit me. I just can’t understand what gets into him > when he does that. I have had him since he was a baby.
