Smelly Cat!

Question:

Do you bathe him…I know most people don’t bathe their cats but I do (because I like them to smell nice and clean).  Since I started them as kittens, they have no problem with it.  I would thin it might be difficult to start them at an older age…probably should take them to a groomer.

Response:

Any chance he caught some disease in the kennel, possibly causing diarrhea? I’d have your vet check him out soonest.  A cat that isn’t keeping himself clean is probably sick. — One of the most striking differences between a cat and a lie is that a cat has only nine lives.  Mark Twain – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -> We put our male Norwegian forest cat in a kennel while we went on vacation, > and since we have been home, he has started to smell like cat urine and we > have found feces fused with his bottom.  Before we put him in the kennel, he > was a sweet smelling cat and very very clean. > Does anyone know what might cause this (and how to prevent it)? > Sally

How long have you been home and how long was he in the kennel?  Is he a long-haired cat (not familiar with that breed)?  I had a rather plump male cat who often had feces stuck to his butt because he was unable to clean himself down there.  But if your cat used to be clean and since the kennel has not been, he might have been traumatized there. lishy Before you buy.

Response:

Holly, Is the kitten long haired?  If it is, you could carefully trim the hair around the butt so the poop wouldn’t stick to it.  I had this problem with Tiger and the vet trimmed it for me – solved the problem (for the time being anyway).                   -MIKE

Response:

Is her poop normal?  It’s possible it’s runny and so she always gets some on her.  Is it only the fur around her bum that smells or elsewhere, too? Maybe she rolls around in it instead of burying it!  Cats can do some pretty stupid things.

Take a stool sample to a vet, she may have parasites.   Please DO NOT get medication over the counter.   Also change the food to Nutro Max, no dye, no by-product, no corn and   is preserved with vitamin E.  corn gives cats, smelly stool and wind:-)   Have her spayed at 4 months.   Do not bath the kitten any more, but groom her every day.   Best to you and your pet.   ob. — ****    Odette Brown ** I love Cats    ***** *** La Belle Province ** Quebec ** CANADA *** *** http://www.igs.net/~rathey/odette1.htm ***

weekly, > but her fur smells! Holly, This reminds me of my cat Effie, who is large, and not at all oriented to personal hygeine.  Aside from not being able to clean herself well, Eff’s big problem is that she occasionally steps in her poop (thus affording her the nicknames "poop shoes", and "fecal feet").   We pay close attention to her feet and behind, and assist her in cleaning when needed.  She doesn’t like it, but she tolerates it.   Anyway, I second everyone elses suggestions to take her in to the vet.  She may have something other than klutsy cat behavior at work here. have you tried changing litter brands?

Response:

Hi Holly; Some cats (and kittens) seem to like using the litterbox as a bed as well as a toilet. This "could" be the source of the stinky cat. Another possibility is that she has a physical problem that is manifesting itself in an odor in the fur. Have you changed her ration lately? (new brand of cat food). The best course of action is to have her thoroughly checked by your vet to rule out any medical reason for the smell. If there is no medical reason and it is just poor grooming on her part, you can eliminate (pun intended) or at least minimize the smell by wiping her down with a damp cloth daily. It’s not as radical as frequent bathing and it will also help keep the cat dander down if you have any allergic family members.
