cat behavioral problem

Question:

I have had a cat (Helmar, female, neutered, fronts declawed)  four years old. I like cats so I thought I would like another one. I went to a no-kill shelter and picked out Ryley,(male, neutered, fronts declawed) who is 9 months. I was told how to introduce them to each other and I have followed those instruction. The first time they saw each other I had Ryley on a leash, but he got out of the collar and ran and atacked Helmar and bite me on the arm in several places, no stitches just antibiotics. I got them apart and except for Ryley escaping from the room hes in, (I do let him out by himself for several hours during the day and in the evening, with Helmar in another room) they have not been together since. When Ryley does get out of my granddaughters bedroom he again atacks Helmar. I need help. Ryley is a very loving cat. You can pet him anytime and anywhere on his body. He likes to play and be held. I would like to solve this problem so that we can keep Ryley. I need help and some suggestions. Gloria, Sorry to hear that Ryley and Helmar don’t like each other yet. This can be a difficult problem, and sometimes it takes a long time to settle. There are a lot of sites that have information about this which might be able to give you information about other things you can do. One site is www.maxshouse.com – go to behavior or www.vetinfo.com – go to catinfo and look up aggressiveness and look up territorial behavior.  Those should help a lot.  Another site is www.wicatclub.com, and www.newmavetierinary.com/feline.htm (I think – may be wrong). You might need to consider medication, or you can try Feliway (a synthetic pheromone that can have a calming effect – not fed to the cat but spread around your home.  You can only get Feliway from the vet. Some folks here swear by Rescue Remedy, but I didn’t have any luck with it – think it varies. Don’t give up yet – I know how stressful this is for you too.
