cat behavior problem

Question:

Hello – I have a friend with a rather bizarre cat behavioral problem on her hands. She doesn’t have internet access so I agreed to post this for her, in hopes that someone here might be able to offer some advice, or even an explanation of what the heck is going on. We’re really at our wits end trying to figure out what’s wrong and how to fix it. Here’s the situation: I have had cats most of my life, and I am now having a problem that I have not experienced before – my vet says he hasn’t seen anything quite like this, either.  Any advice and/or information about similar experiences will be greatly appreciated. I will describe the environment and cats before I describe the problem.  This is a three-cat household, all indoor cats, all fixed. Girl 1 is three years old; Girl 2 is a few weeks younger than Female 1.  Both came to live here when they were about two months old and both are from rescue "families" – that is, they were rescued with their mothers and litter mates and spent their early days in multi-cat foster homes.   Boy is also a rescue cat, but spent most of his first five months of life in a cage in the kennel room at the vet; he came to live here at age five months, was neutered at six months and has now been here a little over a year.  Girl 1 tolerates him and Girl 2 adores him.  Boy and Girl 2 snuggle, groom each other, play together, hang out together
